In Uganda, compulsory education is compulsory for all children up to grade 7, and in principle all children should be able to attend state schools free of charge. However, the public schools are, according to the unanimous opinion of many who are involved in education, relatively poorly equipped and provided for. The performance is rather below average. For this reason, there are a large number of private schools in Uganda with very different providers. Often churches or Islamic communities are the sponsors of private schools.
All schools in Uganda are organised as all-day schools. The school day usually starts at 8 o’clock in the morning and lasts until 4 p.m. or even 4.30 p.m.
